Ben Fowler’s lifelong love of boat building informs much of his design and never more so than his beautifully made Roundwood Chair. The chair’s clean, contemporary lines and graceful curves are expressive of its simple, yet well-considered construction.

The chair’s structural integrity relies on a single-piece laminated shell; its arms and double-curved backrest are moulded in one piece, a technique often used in boatbuilding. The back, arms and curved seat platform are made from a laminated aeroply pressing while the locally soured ash legs spring from it, delivering a lightweight chair that offers strength, movement, flex and comfort.

Part of the Roundwood Chair’s defining character comes from its delicately lathe-turned tapered legs joined at the arm by means of a handsome round-through tenon secured with a timber wedge. Beauty is in the detail. Ben’s design is flawlessly executed by Fowler & Co for Marque Sussex. The backrest and seat are available in a choice of veneers and timbers to suit the customer’s taste.
